When she was nineteen 2 CONT years of age, she and her mother went to Tacoma, Washington where her 2 CONT elder brother made his home. 2 CONT This may have been a permanent move as she intended to continue her 2 CONT study of music in the college there. However, soon after arriving in 2 CONT Tacoma her mother died. This was a sudden death which occurred in the 2 CONT Tacoma Postoffice. Ellis and A. N. Hungerford. 2 CONT Published in Philadelphia by Everts, Peck & Richards, 1886 2 CONT Pages 68- 2 CONT 2 CONT "Fort Bigham" was a strong block-house and small stockade located about 2 CONT twelve miles from Mifflintown, in Tuscarora Valley, on the plantation of 2 CONT Samuel Bigham, who, with three other Scotch- Irish settlers,--viz.: John 2 CONT and James Gray and Robert Hoag,--came and located at that place soon 2 CONT after 1754, and, joining their forces, built a "fort" on Bigham's land as 2 CONT a place of refuge and protection for themselves and families. It was also 2 CONT used as a shelter by the other settlers who came to the vicinity during 2 CONT the succeeding seven years, until June, 1756, when it was attacked, 2 CONT captured and burned by Indians, who killed or took prisoner every person 2 CONT who was in the fort. The Pennsylvania Gazette of June 17, gave this 2 CONT account of the massacre: 2 CONT 2 CONT "We have advice from Carlisle that on Friday night last (June 11th), 2 CONT Capt. Bigham's Fort, in Tuscarora Valley, was destroyed by the Indians. 2 CONT There is no particular account come to hand, only in general it is said 2 CONT that all that were in it are either killed or carried off; and that a 2 CONT woman, big with child, was found dead and scalped near the fort, mangled 2 CONT in a most shocking manner." 2 CONT 2 CONT From Pennsylvania Gazette, June 24. "The following is a list of the 2 CONT persons killed and missing at Bigham's Fort, viz: George Woods, Nathaniel 2 CONT Bigham, Robert Taylor, his wife and two children, Francis Innis, his wife 2 CONT and three children, John McDonnell, Hannah Gray, and one child, missing. 2 CONT Some of these supposed to be burnt in the fort, as a number of bones were 2 CONT found there. Susan Giles was found dead and scalped in the neighborhood 2 CONT of the fort. Robert Cochran and Thomas McKinney found dead, scalped. 2 CONT Alexander McAllister and his wife, James Adams, Jane Cochran and two 2 CONT children missed. McAllister's house was burned and a number of cattle and 2 CONT horses driven off. The enemy was supposed to be numerous, as they did eat 2 CONT and carry off a great deal of Beef they had killed." 2 CONT 2 CONT At the time when the savages made their attack on the fort, John Gray, 2 CONT one of the above named original settlers of the place, was absent at 2 CONT Carlisle, whither he had gone to procure salt. On his return he found the 2 CONT fort destroyed and his family missing,--probably prisoners in the hands 2 CONT of the Indians. In the hope of finding, or hearing from them, he 2 CONT volunteered to go with Colonel Armstrong, in the expedition which went 2 CONT soon afterwards, against the Indian town of Kittaning, on the Allegheny, 2 CONT but he gained no intelligence of those whom he sought, and soon after his 2 CONT return he left the Juniata country, and went back to his old home in 2 CONT Bucks County, where he remained until his death. Meanwhile, his wife and 2 CONT daughter had been taken by their savage captors to Kittaning and thence 2 CONT to Canada, from which latter place Mrs. Gray escaped and returned to 2 CONT Tuscarora Valley in 1757. Afterwards, a young woman claiming to be the 2 CONT daughter made her appearance there also, and was said to have been 2 CONT recognized by the mother; a full account of the case will be found in 2 CONT Milford township, Juniata County. 2 CONT 2 CONT ECOND PERIOD OF INDIAN WAR.--The plan of the great Ottawa chief was to 2 CONT unite all the Indian tribes east and west against the whites, and in the 2 CONT harvest time of 1763 to invade their settlements, carrying massacre and 2 CONT conflagration in their path. This plan was put in bloody execution in 2 CONT many localities, among which was the upper part of Cumberland County 2 CONT (northward of the Blue Mountain), which region suffered in the 2 CONT hostilities of that year perhaps more severely (in proportion to the 2 CONT number of inhabitants which it then contained) than any other part of the 2 CONT province of Pennsylvania. Again (as in 1756) the country was abandoned by 2 CONT the settlers, who fled from their homes across the mountain and sought 2 CONT refuge at Carlisle, Bedford, Shippensburg, Fort Littleton and other 2 CONT points. 2 CONT A letter from Carlisle, under date of August 14, 1763, to the rector of 2 CONT Christ Church, Philadelphia, stated that in Cumberland County, 2 CONT principally in the Juniata Valley, seven hundred and fifty families had 2 CONT abandoned their plantations and crops from fear of Indian incursions. 2 CONT Several occurrences had given legitimate ground for this terror and 2 CONT flight. On the 10th of July, 1763, the Indians committed murders at 2 CONT William White's, on the Juniata, at Robert Campbell's, on Tuscarora 2 CONT Creek, and at William Anderson's, and committed depredations at Collins' 2 CONT and James Scott's, in the Tuscarora Valley, and burned Graham's house. 2 CONT 2 CONT The white massacre and some of the other atrocities are interestingly 2 CONT and probably accurately related by Robert Robison, as follows: 2 CONT 2 CONT "In the second war, on the fifth (tenth) day of July, 1763, the Indians 2 CONT came to Juniata, it being harvest time there, and the white people were 2 CONT come back to reap their crops. They came first to the house of William 2 CONT White; it was on the Sabbath day; the reapers were all in the house. The 2 CONT Indians crept up nigh to the house door and shot the people laying on the 2 CONT floor, killed William White and all his family that were there, excepting 2 CONT one boy, who, when he heard the guns, leaped out of the window and made 2 CONT his escape. 2 CONT 2 CONT "This same party went to Robert Campbell's, on the Tuscarora Creek, 2 CONT surprised them in the same way, shot them on the floor, where they were 2 CONT resting themselves. One George Dodds, being there harvesting, had just 2 CONT risen and gone into the room and lay down on the bed, setting his gun 2 CONT beside him. When the Indians fired, one of them sprang into the house 2 CONT with his tomahawk in his hand, running up to where a man was standing in 2 CONT the corner. Dodds fired at the Indian not six feet from him; the Indian 2 CONT gave a halloo and ran out as fast as he could. There being an opening in 2 CONT the loft above the bed, Dodds sprang up there and went out by the 2 CONT chimney, making his escape and came to Shearman Valley. He came to 2 CONT William Dickson's and told what had happened, there being a young man 2 CONT there which brought the news to us, who were harvesting at Edward 2 CONT Elliot's other intelligence; we got in the night. John Graham, John 2 CONT Christy and James Christy were alarmed in the evening by guns firing at 2 CONT William Anderson's, where the old man was killed with his Bible in his 2 CONT hand, supposed he was about to worship; his son also was killed and a 2 CONT girl that had been brought up by the old people. Graham and the Christys 2 CONT come about midnight, we hearing the Indians had got so far up the 2 CONT Tuscarora Valley, and knowing Collins' family and James Scott's were 2 CONT there about their harvest, twelve of us concluded to go over to Bingham's 2 CONT Gap and give those word that were there. When we came to Collins' we saw 2 CONT that the Indians had been there, had broke a wheel, emptied a bed and 2 CONT taken flour, of which they made some water gruel. We counted thirteen 2 CONT spoons made of bark; we followed the tracks down to James Scott's, where 2 CONT we found the Indians had killed some fowls; we pursued on to Graham's; 2 CONT there the house was on fire and burned down to the joists; we divided our 2 CONT men into two parties, six in each. My brother with his party came in 2 CONT behind the barn, and myself with the other party came down through an 2 CONT oats field. I was to shoot. The Indians had hung a coat upon a post on 2 CONT the other side of the fire from us. I looked at it and saw it immovable, 2 CONT and therefore walked down to it and found that the Indians had just left 2 CONT it. They had killed four hogs and had eaten at pleasure. Our company took 2 CONT their tracks and found that two companies had met at Graham's and had 2 CONT gone over the Tuscarora Mountain. We took the Run Gap, the two roads 2 CONT meeting at Nicholson's. They were there. They first heard us coming and 2 CONT lay in ambush for us. They had the first fire, being twenty-five in 2 CONT number and only twelve of us. They killed five and wounded myself. They 2 CONT then went to Alexander Logan's where they emptied some beds and passed on 2 CONT to George McCord's. 2 CONT 2 CONT "A party of forty men came from Carlisle in order to bury the dead of 2 CONT Juniata. When they saw the dead at Buffalo Creek, they returned home. 2 CONT Then a party of men came with Captain Dunning; but before they came to 2 CONT Alexander Logan's, his son John, Charles Coyle, William Hamilton, with 2 CONT Bartholomew Davis, followed the Indians to George McCord's, where they 2 CONT were in the barn. Logan and those with him were all killed except Davis, 2 CONT who made his escape. The Indians then returned to Logan's house again, 2 CONT when Captain Dunning and his party came on them, and they fired some time 2 CONT at each other. Dunning had one man wounded." 2 CONT 2 CONT "Carlisle, July 12, 1763. 2 CONT "I embrace this first leisure, since yesterday morning, to transmit you 2 CONT a brief account of our present state of affairs here, which indeed is 2 CONT very distressing; every day almost affording some fresh object to awaken 2 CONT the compassion, alarm the fears or kindle into resentment and vengeance 2 CONT every sensible breast, while flying families, obliged to abandon house 2 CONT and possession, to save their lives by a hasty escape; mourning widows 2 CONT bewailing their husbands, surprised and massacred by savage rage; tender 2 CONT parents lamenting the fruit of their own bodies, cropt in the very bloom 2 CONT of life by a barbarous hand; with relations and acquaintances pouring out 2 CONT sorrow for murdered neighbors and friends, present a scene of mingled 2 CONT distress. 2 CONT 2 CONT "When, for some time, after striking at Bedford, the Indians appeared 2 CONT quiet, nor struck any other part of our frontiers, it became the 2 CONT prevailing opinion that our forts and communication were so peculiarly 2 CONT the object of their attention that, till at least after harvest, there 2 CONT was little prospect of danger to our inhabitants over the hills; and to 2 CONT dissent from this generally-received sentiment was political heresy, and 2 CONT attributed to timidity rather than judgment, till too early conviction 2 CONT has decided the point in the following manner: 2 CONT 2 CONT "On Sunday morning, the 10th inst., about nine or ten o'clock, at the 2 CONT house of one William White, on Juniata, between thirty and forty miles 2 CONT hence, there being in said house four men and a lad, the Indians came 2 CONT rushing upon them, and shot White at the door, just stepping out to see 2 CONT what the noise meant. Our people then pulled in White and shut the door; 2 CONT but observing, through a window, the Indians setting fire to the house, 2 CONT they attempted to force their way out at the door; but the first that 2 CONT stept out being shot down, they drew him in and again shut the door; 2 CONT after which one, attempting an escape out of a window on the loft, was 2 CONT shot through the head, and the lad wounded in the arm. The only one now 2 CONT remaining, William Riddle, broke a hole through the roof of the house, 2 CONT and an Indian, who saw him looking out, alleged he was about to fire on 2 CONT him, withdrew, which afforded Riddle an opportunity to make his escape. 2 CONT The house, with the other four in it, was burned down, as one McMachen 2 CONT informs, who was coming to it, not suspecting Indians, and was by them 2 CONT fired at and shot through the shoulder, but made his escape. The same 2 CONT day, about dinner-time, at about a mile and a half from said White's, at 2 CONT the house of Robert Campbell, six men being in the house, as they were 2 CONT dining, three Indians rushed in at the door, and, after firing among them 2 CONT and wounding some, they tomahawked, in an instant, one of the men; 2 CONT whereupon one George Dodds, one of the company, sprang back into the 2 CONT room, took down a rifle, shot an Indian through the body, who was 2 CONT presenting his piece to shoot him. The Indian, being mortally wounded, 2 CONT staggered, and, letting his gun fall, was carried off by three more. 2 CONT Dodds, with one or two more, getting upon the loft, broke the roof in 2 CONT order to escape, and, looking out, saw one of the company, Stephen 2 CONT Jeffries, running, but very slowly, by reason of a wound in the breast, 2 CONT and an Indian pursuing; and it is thought he could not escape, nor have 2 CONT we heard of him since; so that it is past dispute he also is murdered. 2 CONT The first that attempted getting out of the loft was fired at, and drew 2 CONT back; another, attempting, was shot dead, and of the six, Dodds was the 2 CONT only one made his escape. The same day, about dusk, about six or seven 2 CONT miles up Tuscarora, and about twenty-eight or thirty miles hence, they 2 CONT murdered one William Anderson, together with a boy and girl all in one 2 CONT house. At White's were seen at least five, some say eight or ten Indians, 2 CONT and at Campbell's about same number. On Monday, the 11th, a party of 2 CONT about twenty-four went over from the upper part of Shearman's Valley to 2 CONT see how matters were. Another party of twelve or thirteen went over from 2 CONT the upper part of said valley; and Colonel John Armstrong, with Thomas 2 CONT Wilson, Esq., and a party of between thirty and forty from this town, to 2 CONT reconnoiter and assist in bringing the dead. 2 CONT "Of the first and third parties we have heard nothing yet; but of the 2 CONT party of twelve, six are come in and inform that they have passed through 2 CONT the several places in Tuscarora, and saw the houses in flames or burnt 2 CONT entirely down; that the grain that had been reaped the Indians burnt in 2 CONT shocks, and had set the fences on fire where the grain was unreaped; that 2 CONT the hogs had fallen upon and mangled several of the dead bodies; that the 2 CONT said company of twelve, suspecting danger, durst not stay to bury the 2 CONT dead; that after they had returned over the Tuscarora mountain, about one 2 CONT or two miles on this side of it, and about eighteen or twenty from hence, 2 CONT they were fired on by a large party of Indians, supposed about thirty, 2 CONT and were obliged to fly; that two, viz., William Robison and John Graham, 2 CONT are certainly killed, and four more are missing, who, it is thought, have 2 CONT fallen into the hands of the enemy, as they appeared slow in flight, most 2 CONT probably wounded, and the savages pursued with violence. A party of volunteers (between 2 CONT twenty and thirty) went to the farther side of the valley, next to the 2 CONT Tuscarora Mountain, to see what appearance there might be of the Indians, 2 CONT as it was thought they would most probably be there, if anywhere in the 2 CONT settlement; to search for, and bury the dead at Buffalo Creek, and to 2 CONT assist the inhabitants that lived along the foot of the mountain, in 2 CONT bringing off what they could, which services they accordingly performed, 2 CONT burying the remains of three persons, but saw no marks of Indians having 2 CONT lately been there, excepting one track, supposed about two or three days 2 CONT old, near the narrows of Buffalo creek hill, and heard some hallooing and 2 CONT firing of a gun at another place. A number of the inhabitants of 2 CONT Tuscarora Valley go over the mountain to-morrow, with a party of 2 CONT soldiers, to endeavor to save part of the crops. Five Indians were seen 2 CONT last Sunday, about sixteen or seventeen miles from Carlisle, up the 2 CONT valley, towards the North mountain, and two the day before yesterday, 2 CONT above five or six miles from Shippensburg, who fired at a young man and 2 CONT missed him. 2 CONT 2 CONT "On the 25th July there were in Shippensburg 1384 of our poor, 2 CONT distressed, back inhabitants, viz.: men, 301; women, 345; children, 738; 2 CONT many of whom were obliged to lie in barns, stables, cellars, and under 2 CONT old, leaky sheds, the dwelling-houses being all crowded. 2 CONT 2 CONT "In a letter dated Carlisle, 13th August, 1763, it is said that some 2 CONT Indians have lately been seen in Shearman's Valley, and that on the 11th 2 CONT the tracts of a party were found there, supposed to consist of eight or 2 CONT ten, coming through Shearman's Valley towards Carlisle, about twelve 2 CONT miles upward. In another letter, dated August 17th, mention is made that 2 CONT one John Martin, in the Great Cove, seeing an Indian coming up to a house 2 CONT where he was, fired at him, upon which the Indian raised a yell and took 2 CONT a tree; that Martin, imagining there might be more Indians near him, ran 2 CONT to a company at work and told what had happened, when they went to the 2 CONT place, found some blood and excrements, from which they concluded he was 2 CONT shot through the bowels. 2 CONT "They followed his track down to a bottom, where they saw the tracks of 2 CONT six or seven more, but, being a small party, pursued no farther. In the 2 CONT same letter, it is also said that a young man, at a plantation about nine 2 CONT miles from Carlisle, near the foot of the mountain, saw an Indian and 2 CONT fired at him at about fifty yards' distance, but was not sure that he hit 2 CONT him. The Indian took a tree and the lad went back a little way, in order 2 CONT to load again, but on his return could not see the Indian. He then 2 CONT alarmed the neighborhood, and, the soldiers being all out in parties 2 CONT covering the people gathering in grain, upwards of twenty young men 2 CONT turned out immediately, from Carlisle, to scour the woods." 2 CONT 2 CONT The condition of the people throughout this region at the close of 1763 2 CONT is described by Colonel Armstrong, then in command of the forces west of 2 CONT the Blue Ridge, in a letter to Governor Penn, dated in December, 1763: 2 CONT "The people drove off by the enemy from the north side of the mountains 2 CONT forms the Frontier, as they are mixed with the settlers on the south 2 CONT side, where, of course, the motions of the Ranging Party are required. At 2 CONT the same time, those who have been driven from their habitations have 2 CONT some part of their Effects yet behind and their Crops stacked in the 2 CONT fields in the different Valleys at a considerable distance beyond the 2 CONT Mountains. 2 CONT "To these distressed People we must afford covering Parties as often as 2 CONT they request them, or will convene in small bodies to thrash out their 2 CONT Grain and carry it over to their families for their supplies. The last 2 CONT mentioned Service, necessary as it is, greatly obstructs the uniform 2 CONT course of patrolling behind the Inhabitants, that otherwise might be 2 CONT performed." 2 CONT The terror created in 1763 did not subside sufficiently to admit the 2 CONT resumption of peaceful avocations in any marked degree until 1765. 2 CONT Colonel Henry Bouquet's victory in Ohio, in 1764, in a measure, cowed the 2 CONT Indians, and they were obliged to be peaceable. The settlers gradually 2 CONT returned, and by 1767 all of the best locations were taken up by 2 CONT "squatters 2 CONT 0 @I136@ INDI 1 NAME John /Logan/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 27 FEB 1702/03 2 PLAC Kilwinning, Ayr, Scotland 1 DEAT 2 DATE ABT. 1757 2 PLAC Pennboro Twp, Cumberland Co, PA 1 FAMS @F050@ 1 FAMC @F100@ 1 NOTE Will of John Logan: 2 CONT February 9, 1757, I, John Logan, of West Pennsboro Township in the 2 CONT County of Cumberland and Province of Pennsylvania, yeoman,,, will that 2 CONT all my just debts be duly and timously paid. ,,,, I will and bequeath 2 CONT unto my dear and loving wife Janot Logan one-third part of all my real 2 CONT and personal estate to be disposed by her as she shall think best and 2 CONT particular to clothe, school, and bring up that child Ann Ervin and if 2 CONT said child outlives my wife, her executor is to bring up said child Ann 2 CONT Ervin in manner aforesaid. ..... unto my two sons Alexander and William 2 CONT Logan all my body clothes to be divided equally between them .... to my 2 CONT daughter Iounna Logan alias Tounsley a white faced two year old heifer 2 CONT ..... to my daughter Mary Logan alias Ervin one black three year old 2 CONT heifer calf ..... to my two other daughters, Elinor and Martha Logan all 2 CONT the remainder or other parts of my real and personal estate to be divided 2 CONT equally between them after my decease .... It's not a part of her job to "take report" - as they call it 2 CONT at the hospital - but she wouldn't have it any other way. 2 CONT Her deep love for nursing and her personal philosophy could never 2 CONT allow an impersonal attitude about her position as administrator. To 2 CONT her, getting to know the patients is not a duty, but a pleasure. And 2 CONT every day she visits up and down the corridors. 2 CONT "Many times I'll say to myself, "Today I'll do two floors"" Mrs. Spry 2 CONT said, "But you know, I meet so many friends after 25 years here that I 2 CONT seldom complete my goal." 2 CONT Bishop Clarkson Memorial Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, was the setting 2 CONT for Mrs. Spry's nurses training. At the time her ambition was to become 2 CONT a private duty nurse, but she found herself entering the administrative 2 CONT phase of nursing. 2 CONT Still she carried the philosophy of "tender loving care", as given as 2 CONT given by a private duty nurse, into her administrative positions. And 2 CONT that is probably the secret of why Mrs.Spry is so respected and loved by 2 CONT all who know her. 2 CONT After graduating from the nursing school, Mrs. Spry stayed in Omaha 2 CONT for a while before coming to the Coast. Then she joined the staff at 2 CONT Tacoma General Hospital where for five years she was a comgination 2 CONT director of nursing services, director of the school of nursing and 2 CONT assistant in the administration - a job that three people would do in 2 CONT this day. 2 CONT Srs. Spry arrived in Everett sept. 15.1930, and for twenty-five years 2 CONT the lives of Everett GTeneral Hospital and Cecile Tracy Spry have run 2 CONT hand in hand. 2 CONT Reminiscing about the growth of the institution, the administrator 2 CONT compared statistics in 1932 - the year the Everett General Hospital 2 CONT Association was organized - to 1954. Then the hospital had 74 beds, now 2 CONT it has 127. 2 CONT All the nurses who have trained at General since Mrs. Spry's arrival 2 CONT have gone on into their profession with her philosophy of nursing alive 2 CONT in their minds. 2 CONT She reminds them to take care of their patients as if they were 2 CONT members of their family, to maintain loyalty to their hospital, doctors 2 CONT and the other nurses, and to respect the confidence of their patients. 2 CONT Besides her recognition in the community as an outstanding woman, Mrs. 2 CONT Spry has received national recognition. 2 CONT She is a charter fellow of the American College of Hospital 2 CONT Administrators and was a vice president last year; life member of the 2 CONT American Hospital Association and a past vice president; past president 2 CONT of both the State Nurses and the State Hospital Associations. She also 2 CONT is a member of Zonta Club and the PEO Sisterhood. 2 CONT Mrs. Spry's personal life centers a great deal around her 2 CONT grandchildren - and like all grandmothers, she is very proud of them. 2 CONT Her son, Vernon Tracy Spry, is also a hospital administrator at Asbury 2 CONT Methodist in Minneapolis. His two children are Tracy and Susan. Her 2 CONT daughter, Mrs. Muriel Gunderson, who lives in Everett, has two children, 2 CONT Cecile and Jari. 2 CONT In remembering her years at General Hospital, Mrs. Spry expressed her 2 CONT appreciation for the fine boards she has worked under, the help of the 2 CONT women's auxillary, the work of the Hospital Association, the service of 2 CONT the Children's foundation groups, the strength of the Alumnae 2 CONT Association, the excellent quality of the medical staff and the 2 CONT faithfulness of the employees. 2 CONT And they, in turn, thank Mrs. Spry for her unselfish leadership 2 CONT without which General Hospital would not be the institution in Everett 2 CONT that it is today. 2 CONT To show their appreciation for Mrs. Spry's service throughout her 25 2 CONT years here a surprise party was given by the Alumnae and employees of the 2 CONT hospital last Thursday evening, the day of her anniversary. 2 CONT And last night, an open house in the Jordon Home for the administrator 2 CONT drew a large crowd of townspeople who wanted to say "thank you" to Mrs. 2 CONT Spry. 2 CONT The tea table at the open house was centered with a dramatic 2 CONT arrangement of silvered sleek blossoms and funkia leaves and silver 2 CONT candelabra holding fern green tapers. Matching arrangements graced the 2 CONT mantelpiece. Mrs. Arne Jensen did the decorative work. 2 CONT Mrs. James Ramsey Jr. assisted by hsopitality chairman of the 2 CONT Children's Foundation, Mrs. Thor Madsen and Mrs. Claude Whitehead were u 2 CONT charge. 2 CONT Invited to pour were the Mesdames Anson B. Moody, Katherine MacDonald, 2 CONT Mortiner Stocker and George Moore. Assisting were the Mesdames Gordon 2 CONT Hutchints, Paul Peterson, Harry Stuchel, Clarence Lasher and W.R. Paddock. 2 CONT Among the gifts presented to the administrator have been a sterling 2 CONT silver service by the hospital board of directors; an Arne Jensen 2 CONT watercolor by the alumnae and employees of the hospital; a watch by the 2 CONT Children's Foundation and Women's Auxiliaries; a desk pen by the Hospital 2 CONT Association, and a purse by the Lowell Guild of the Women's Auxiliary. 0 @I142@ INDI 1 NAME John Park /Norcross/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 16 APR 1850 2 PLAC Monmouth, Warren Co. As a ÿ10 year old child, he 2 CONT travelled with the ÿfamily ÿto Bowling Green in Warren County, 2 CONT Kentucky in about 1804. 2 CONT 2 CONT Likewise he travelled with his father and the rest of the several 2 CONT families that moved northwest into ÿthe southern Indiana Territory 2 CONT near ÿPrinceton, Indiana in 1811. 2 CONT 2 CONT Elijah ÿworked ÿon his father's ÿfarm ÿas ÿa teenager and on 2 CONT April 18, 1817, he married ÿElizabeth Duff in Gibson County. 2 CONT Elizabeth Duff was the eldest daughter of Abraham Duff and Verlinda 2 CONT Combs Duff. She was born in Anderson, Pendleton County, South Carolina on 2 CONT April 16, 1798. The Duffs and the Combs families travelled with the 2 CONT Putmans as they moved westwards during the next three decades. His 2 CONT brothers, Hazeal and Reding both married other Combs girls. 2 CONT 2 CONT Elijah and Elizabeth moved to Illinois shortly after they were married. 2 CONT They ÿappear ÿin the 1820 census in the Cityÿof Springfield in ÿ 2 CONT Madison County, then comprising most of the State of Illinois north of 2 CONT St.ÿClair County, Illinois. 2 CONT 2 CONT They probably settled in or near what is now Fulton County a few years 2 CONT later.
